If the Select Servers page appears, in the Enter name box, enter the NetBIOS name or the fully qualified domain name of a server that you plan to add as a failover cluster node, and then select Add. To add multiple servers at the same time, separate the names by a comma or a semicolon. If you chose to create the cluster immediately after running validation in the configuration validating procedure , you will not see the Select Servers page.
The nodes that were validated are automatically added to the Create Cluster Wizard so that you do not have to enter them again. If you skipped validation earlier, the Validation Warning page appears. We strongly recommend that you run cluster validation. Only clusters that pass all validation tests are supported by Microsoft. To run the validation tests, select Yes , and then select Next.
Complete the Validate a Configuration Wizard as described in Validate the configuration. In the Cluster Name box, enter the name that you want to use to administer the cluster. Before you do, review the following information:.
If the server does not have a network adapter that is configured to use DHCP, you must configure one or more static IP addresses for the failover cluster. Select the check box next to each network that you want to use for cluster management. Select the Address field next to a selected network, and then enter the IP address that you want to assign to the cluster.
If you're using Windows Server , you have the option to use a distributed network name for the cluster. A distributed network name uses the IP addresses of the member servers instead of requiring a dedicated IP address for the cluster. By default, Windows uses a distributed network name if it detects that you're creating the cluster in Azure so you don't have to create an internal load balancer for the cluster , or a normal static or IP address if you're running on-premises.

On the Summary page, confirm that the failover cluster was successfully created. If there were any warnings or errors, view the summary output or select View Report to view the full report. Select Finish. The cluster name failed to the remote data center node and the remote node was able to get a lock on the file share witness file. At that point, our VPN tunnel dropped.
The one node that was up in the primary data center and had services running noticed that the remote cluster node was down and attempted to bring the cluster name online. The file share witness file was still locked by the remote node, and the one visible running cluster node in the primary data center was unable to bring the cluster name online and it shut down the cluster service on itself.
Caveats: Firewalling the file share from the remote node is not an option due to other processes that use it. I've considered attempting to remove the remote cluster node from possible owners of the cluster name, but I've not done or tested that before and I don't want to blow up my production cluster.
Is it possible to remove a cluster node from possible owners for the cluster name? If we have to fail our services to the remote data center, there are a number of moving pieces that need be coordinated, so I don't want "automated" failover of service to the remote data center.
The reason the remote node is in a cluster at all is for the SQL Server Availability Groups, to manage the replication to the remote node. I've also considered removing the file share witness and giving the remote node a vote. The new dynamic quorum "should" keep the cluster online if one node goes down for a reboot and network connectivity is lost to the remote data center.
I actually like giving the remote node a vote because it'd make planned failovers that much easier. Plus, you're not worried about high availability on the file share. So I'm with Brent here.
No matter if your disks are physically the same in terms of model or manufacturer but concerned data and log drives must be identical in terms of geometry that includes block format, sector size and identical filesystem as well. Storage replica is very flexible on this topic and this is a good news because it carries out any Windows volume, any fixed disk storage or any storage fabric.
Microsoft recommends at least 8GB of free space in order to carry out your disaster but this is not mandatory. Microsoft recommends to have less than 5ms round trip in average but lower latency you have, better performance you will get for sure. Generally speaking in my area, I often worked with customers where data centers are far from 50km and k.
So getting low latency in this case is not much an issue. Storage replica runs on the top of SMB 3. The other interesting section of the validation report concerns the initial synchronization performance where both disk throughput and disk latency are tested.
In case, I got very satisfying results from my disks. In addition, SQL Server is generally an intensive IO based application, so bear in mind to have sufficient network bandwidth for your corresponding IO workload.
Ok at this point, my disk topology is ready to be part of my future storage replica configuration. The first step will consist in creating a simple Windows Failover cluster by using the following PowerShell command.

As expected, the IO replication traffic was suspended because the destination was no longer available. So no big surprise here. I decided to perform a more interesting second test that consisted in simulating failure of the source local storage while performing in the same time the insert data stuff into my SQL table.
