The ONLY thing which will qualify an upgrade key and allow an install to be made using that key, is the presence of an existing and working qualifying version Windows install. OLD folder is certainly created when you perform a 'custom clean' install and it contains your previous install, now quarantined safely. A 'custom clean' install does NOT 'format the partition', because there is no need for it to do so.

OLD folder, and then a clean, new install gets placed on the remaining partition space.
